The Icelandic public transport App

The Strætó app is a great example of how digital innovation can make travelling by public transport easier, and so promotes the transition to a greener lifestyle. Passengers can buy tickets and see in real time where the bus is and how long it will be until it arrives.

About the app

THE STORY

In 2014 I was asked to design the app for Strætó, the official Public Bus system in Iceland. The real challenge was to allow users to purchase and validate tickets because the busses were not equipped with a hardware solution to authenticate tickets.

The solution was an easy but brilliant visual verification to authenticate tickets and it has since 2014, worked flawlessly. Users can also find routes, send tickets to other users, buy virtual subscription cards and much more.

In 2017 the app generated just over 31% of all ticket and subscription revenues for Strætó. Every month 50-60 thousand users utilize the Strætó app during their transit time in Iceland (15-16% of Iceland’s population)
